COLFAX, WA.- The Whitman County Sheriffs Office Is Working With Local Businesses, Organizations, and Citizens, To Raise Money For The Purchase a “DARE” Emergency Vehicle (Cop Car).

Working with local citizens, to ensure the future of Whitman County’s DARE program, is what this is all about. Spearheaded by Deputy Michael Bogenreif, the DARE officers in Whitman County are looking for local donations to put a “DARE” vehicle on the road. Deputy Bogenreif along with Deputy Reavis, are currently the County’s two DARE officers. In addition to handling the regular duties of a Deputy Sheriff, Bogenreif and Reavis hit the halls and classrooms of area Whitman County Schools, educating young people about the ills and dangers of illegal drug use and violence. Both Deputies have seen first hand the problems caused by drug use, and are now taking their message to the classroom.

DARE vehicles are nothing new to the drug abuse resistance education program. However, in recent years Whitman County has not had the funding for a vehicle to be used primarily as a teaching tool and training aid. According to DARE officers Bogenreif and Reavis, the car would be used to promote DARE, and bridge the gap between students and law enforcement.

“I think it’s a great idea” Sheriff Myers stated. DARE has been a part of the Whitman County Schools, and Sheriff’s Office for several years. Due to the recent budget cuts and increased demand for law enforcement services, DARE however, has become and additional duty for Patrol Deputies not a full-time dedicated position. “DARE is one of the best programs we have at the Sheriff’s Office. However, with reduced budgets, it has become difficult to operate at the same level as we have in previous years” Myers said. In order to maintain law enforcement services and still provide “DARE”, the Sheriff’s Office has moved the curriculum into a 2-week program. This allows officers to teach all their DARE lessons over a short period of time, and remain in Patrol position for the remainder of the time officers are not teaching.

The Whitman County Sheriff’s Office provides DARE services to 11 area Whitman County Schools.

If you, your business or agency is interested in donating to the Whitman County DARE program, Donations can be made through the Bank of Whitman.
